[Murderous Intent]
Holy mother of -- asdfghjkl;
The beginning: Definitely, definitely not what I thought it was going to be. With a name like "murderous intent", I thought it would start off with a very strong guitar solo, scream, deep bass line, etc. Instead, I was taken aback by the initial "club beats" and female voice. It was quiet, if not a little ominous. Soon after that, right at 00:08, a heavy guitar and scream breaks through the eerie atmosphere and the real song begins.
Highlights:
Our darling Ruki screaming to his heart's content
Cool guitar riffs
Fast-paced
A quiet, down-played verse which emphasizes the heavy chorus
The awesome guitar solo whilst...
RUKI RAPS <33
Female vocals are very strong and placed well
Subtle sound effects reminiscent of their "old/classic" style
Ruki's "engrish" is a little more discernible than normal :D
Reita's screaming at the end <3 (and he might be screaming in other places of the song through the right earbud - I'm not that good at distinguishing his and Ruki's screams yet lol)
Pet Peeves:
While the guitar riff is nice, I feel like it's overplayed and a little too simple - I wish it was a little more complex if it's going to play that often
The female singer kind of steals the show at the end, hahah. She's really good though, just saying.
The opening isn't my favorite -- I wish the song began at 00:08
Overall:
I'm really excited to hear/see this played live, especially the rap part that has Uruha (I think) doing a cool little solo. Also, the screaming is something I've always enjoyed since Ruki does it so well. This song really reminds me of Filth in the Beauty in a really good way! I've missed Gazette's "harder" stuff. So, I'm really happy songs like Vermin came out as well as this. True Murderous Intent balances hard and soft well, like I said during the highlights. So far, I'm loving Pledge's B-sides more than Shiver by far :P
[Voiceless Fear]
Uruha. Why are you so amazing? <33
Kudos to his composition, like seriously. I'm tempted to say this is my favorite song from the Pledge single (though it's a tough call with Murderous Intent)...
The beginning: I can see why this song was put alongside Pledge. The beginning is very soft with piano and acoustics, and Ruki's initially singing is reminiscent of the ballad. But soon it's apparent that this song can definitely stand on its own.
Highlights:
Soft beginning with crisp acoustics
00:38 -- fast, heavy beat (not as heavy as Murderous)
More complex guitar riffs
Subtle guitar effects that cut in here and there with Ruki's singing
I just really like Reita's bass in this one...
Voice effects: distortion, etc
Raw quality of Ruki's vocals, breaking slightly as he sings "kiso wo"/"nani mo", etc
The guitars. Period.
Variety of sound effects that aren't overused, but add to the song all the same (I can't even explain what they are loltechnology illiterate)
2:40 to 3:12 :L
3:39 to 3:43 --> love that particular voice distortion
Falsetto at 4:15 (and towards the end)
Harmonizing female vocals at the beginning and the end of the song (ties the song together in a way)
Overall sense of sadness to the song despite its tempo
Ruki is a beast.
Pet Peeves:
It's really nothing, but I get a little disgruntled when I can tell a "slow-down" part is coming. Definitely not as bad as Hesitation Means Death though (sorry to fans of that song :])
Overall:
I really love this one. The way it almost sounds like Pledge in the beginning in some ways, but then gradually morphs into this totally different song, is amazing. I'm really happy they had this one be 5 minutes long -- it lets them experiment so much more and add in those little details that we love so much. I think the problem with songs such as Shiver and Red - which fans were a little (or a lot) more hesitant about - was that they were way too short and simple in structure to make room for those little add-ins. Sure, they're nice to listen to sometimes, but I think the Pledge single is the Gazette we all fell in love with. I think the Pledge single embodies what Ruki was talking about when he said the band wanted to do their old style, now. Hope you guys liked this one (and all of them, really) as much as I did :D
Happy listening! <3
