strumming along

So, I caved. Jumped the shark. Joined the college bandwagon.
I got a ukulele.
/begin ramble/
Maybe it wasn't just because of the quite handsome men I saw jamming out on the college green to "Hey Soul Sister", and maybe it wasn't just because I'm obsessed with Jason Castro's "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and wanted to get my grubby little hands on it... Okay, those might have been the two glaringly obvious reasons.
But really, it's mostly to do with how I don't have enough room in my dorm to bring up my cello from home. I miss that damn, finicky, always-going-out-of-tune-snapping-strings-in-my-face, lovable instrument. (Her name is Lola, by the way. Though she's called a 'whore' more often - especially when her fine-tuners get stuck...). I haven't made it really known on here about my penchant for playing the cello - I'm too busy posting nonsensical fiction to ramble about my life, haha.
I guess the obsession is equivalent to guitar-junkies -- the ones who go on and on about fuzz tone, distortions, playing until 3:12am just to get that riff right. Well, it's like that. Only my musical 'second-half' is made of cherry wood, croons and warbles like a dream, and rests snugly between my thighs (you read that right).
So, since I can't fit her majesty in the confines of a room that's space is equivalent to, let's face it, a box, I decided that a smaller and more compact instrument was the way to go. And I also love learning new things. ...And I wanted to jam with those beautiful men...
I feel particularly chatty today so if anyone dares to read this wall-o'-text, bear with me.
So, I went scouring across the internets and purchased a soprano ukulele (along with a carrying case) for under $40. I can't pass up a bargain, and it was my birthday so I figured I should jump at the chance, yes? Welp, I officially played it for the first time and -- holy shit, it's a mini-Lola. That damn thing doesn't want to stay in tune. And it doesn't help that the E-string's peg is loose so it DEFINITELY won't stay in tune until I can get my hands on a screwdriver. Other than that, it's a dream (when I'm not tuning it every 5 minutes... and if I ignore the grossly out of tune E-string).
Lesson #1 of getting a ukulele: Geared pegs are your absolute, loyal, forever faithful friend. Do NOT get friction pegs. They will slowly kill you.
In all seriousness, it's pretty awesome. It's nice to play something with strings again and I enjoy learning the chords, giggling like a maniac when I hit it right and it makes a pretty sound (sorry my dear roommate for being a dork XD). I definitely recommend getting a ukulele for anyone who's interested in trying out a small, waif-like instrument such as that.
It's no guitar (I actually have a never-been-played acoustic at home... also got that on a bargain), so you probably won't be able to cover Gazette's PLEDGE. But you'll be able to rock out to Jason Mraz and the Addams Family Theme Song. You have to admit, that's a close second :P
